When does the umbilical cord fall off?

After giving birth, the umbilical cord that connected you to your baby for 9 months is cut. But it doesn't fall off right away.

  • Once you are home with your baby in your arms, you will be responsible for the care of the umbilical cord.
  • The cord must dry before it falls off between 5 and 15 days after birth.
  • Once the umbilical cord has fallen off, it takes about 7 to 10 more days for the area to heal completely.
  • To avoid any risk of infection, clean the umbilical cord and the bellybutton every day with a cotton swab soaked in lukewarm water and dry it well.
