Causes of milk leakage

During breastfeeding, milk leakage can occur, and here are the causes of this perfectly normal phenomenon.

  • Every mom is different: for some, milk leaks are frequent, even systematic; for others, they never happen.
  • Breasts leak simply because they are full of milk, usually in the morning when the baby has not been fed for several hours.
  • In other cases, milk leaks from one breast while you are nursing your baby from the other.
  • Sometimes milk leaks out when you hear another baby crying - this is a let-down reflex!

Usually the birthing of the placenta is what triggers lactation. It’s not recommended for moms to pump before baby gets here because it can induce labor. Most moms can get colostrum before birth but that’s about it.

yeah pretty much only colostrum until birth and use milk catchers until 36 weeks and then hand express from then on, i guess pumping during pregnancy is dangerous bc it can cause contractions

That's a lot of questions! If you're worried you might be in labor, talk to your OB or advice nurse to get their advice just to be safe. I think everyone is a little different with this stuff right? Better safe than sorry.

You can leak colostrum anytime in pregnancy. But your actual breast milk won’t come in until a couple days after birth

Does anyone else who is 27 weeks struggle with very sore breasts? They leak puddles too, like through shirts and even blankets. Is this normal? Am I making too much milk? Am I supposed to be making milk this early?

The milk you are making right now is called colostrum. It is totally normal to produce it. I started producing it at around 18 weeks. About 3 days after you give birth, your breast milk will transition into what you will be feeding baby for the rest of your breastfeeding journey. My breasts are constantly sore as well and that’s due to them growing. Hope that helps :)
