How does lactation occur?

As soon as you become a mother, your body starts lactating, a natural process that helps produce the milk your baby needs.

  • During your pregnancy, your breasts gradually prepare for breastfeeding, and regardless of their size or shape, they all do their job!
  • After the birth, the hormones that cause lactation are released which are also stimulated by your baby's feedings.
  • As nature is very good, you will usually feel a rush of milk when it's time for your baby to eat.
  • Lactation can last several months, depending on the mother and the frequency of breastfeeding.

In Lou of the formula shortage ladies these are some resources to help navigate some outlet to make sure baby is well taken care of ? Gerber's MyGerber Baby Expert: reach a certified nutrition or lactation consultant by phone, text, Facebook Messenger, web chat, or video call, who can help you identify a similar formula that may be more readily available Abbott's Consumer Hotline: call 1-800-986-8540 Abbott's urgent product request line: ask your OBGYN or your infant's pediatrician to submit an urgent product request by downloading and completing the form - PDF Reckitt's Customer Service line: call 1-800 BABY-123 (222-9123) Community Resources Locate your nearest Community Action Agency (CAA). Your neighborhood CAA may be able to provide you with formula or connect you with local agencies that have formula in stock. United Way's 2-1-1: dial 2–1-1 to be connected to a community resource specialist affiliated with United Way who may be able to help you identify food pantries and other charitable sources of local infant formula and baby food. Feeding America: call your local food bank to ask whether they have infant formula and other supplies in stock. Human Milk Banking Association of North America (HMBANA): certain HMBANA-accredited milk banks are distributing donated breast milk to mothers in need; please note that some may require a prescription from a medical professional. Find an HMBANA-accredited milk bank. General Guidance Call your OBGYN or pediatrician to see if they have in-office samples or can suggest a similar formula that may be more readily available in stores and is nutritionally similar to your infant's typical formula.

????? THINGS I WISH I KNEW MY FIRST TIME HAVING A BABY????? You can ask for the IV in your wrist instead of on the top of your hand. It stays in for a couple days and flexing your wrist to breastfeed or hold your baby with this big IV sticking out of the top of your hand is not fun. Pack an EMPTY big bag or backpack for all of the extra stuff you can take home with you (More on this later!) If you’ve had stitches, repeat with me- WARM water in the peri bottle. WARM water in the peri bottle!!! Be excited and calm. Prepare as much as you can and also be fully aware that your preparation is likely going to go right out the window. Know that the nurses really want to help. If you want something - just ask! If they can do it, they usually will! (Even if it’s help braiding your hair! I had one nurse literally cut my gown with scissors because I couldn’t hold my baby fast enough! They are the best!) If you plan to breastfeed- Preparation makes SUCH a difference!! (There are lots of online courses! I personally love The Thompson Method!) There’s nobody in the world better at swaddling a newborn than postpartum and L&D nurses. Highly recommend asking a nurse that you like to teach you their magical ways of the swaddle! You’ll look about 6 months pregnant when you leave the hospital. You’ll also be wearing essentially a diaper sized pad. Please don’t make the mistake I made during my first pregnancy and pack leggings. It’s not a cute look ? You can request wireless monitors so you’re not strapped to the unit during contractions! Pack shampoo, conditioner, and soap. The hospital usually only provides body wash and weird smelling shampoo. Idk about y’all but after birthing a whole human, this woman needs some REAL soap and this hair needs to be conditioned, okay?! Speaking of shower- take one as soon as they tell you it’s okay! That first postpartum shower hits different. You’ll be a new woman after! There will be lots of necessities in your hospital room. Take them ALL home with you! (Girl you paid for ‘em) Diapers, wipes, pads, peri bottle, mesh undies, hemorrhoid cream, breast pump parts, all of it! While you’re at it- ask for extra! Want to try a hand pump? Ask for one! Need tucks? Get you some! You have the right to say no! To anything! Including if they want/need to take your baby in the middle of a feed. You CAN ask them to come back later. Ask your partner to take lots of pictures. Of the room, of the machines, of every moment. You can always delete them later but you won’t have another time to capture this moment! You do not need to pack anything for baby other than a going home outfit! The hospital will provide everything you need. Lactation consultants are there 24hrs a day. You can always ask them to come to the room during a feeding or give advice. Trust your mom gut. It will never lead you astray! Your experience will be exactly as your make it. I’m gonna say that again. Your experience will be EXACTLY as you MAKE it. If you focus on enjoying the moment, it will be the most incredible experience you can imagine. You got this!!!!

So for starters I do have a great milk supply, but only in my left boob. ? since that's the only boob he really drinks from most of the time! I finally got him switched over to the bottle, because my boobs were getting cracked and dry. Keep in mind he has 4 teeth? So the point is, now that he's switched to bottles I'm hoping to pump out of both boobs. Is there any lactation food or drink I can try to increase my milk supply for both my boobs but especially my right?

Any moms have a baby that had bottle aversion? My 3 month old would not take a bottle because of the aversion. She is a breastfed baby. Now that we worked on it with the lactation consultant she no longer screams at the site of a bottle. We just cannot get her to latch. The MAM she tolerates but just plays around with it in her mouth. We have tried every single bottle on the market. Any tips on getting her to latch besides warming the nipple, putting it in my shirt, having someone else giving her the bottle while I leave the house?

Is the nipple of the bottle shaped like the nipple of a breast? I brought bottles from Herobility. My baby loves it. I think it’s the feel and texture of it.

Thank you so much. Did you lose your milk? I’ve been pumping non stop since Friday tmo will be a week seems like it’s getting better but not even getting a ounce in each when before last week I was getting 4oz in each side. I’m taking a tincture. Cookies I’m hydrating. I’m so frustrated as I want my 6 week old baby boy to have my breastmilk instead of formula for all the antibodies etc. since he is a newborn. How long did it take you to get supply back up ? I appreciate you getting back to me
