Breastfeeding: beware of mastitis

Sore breasts, redness, sensitivity... breastfeeding is not always a smooth ride and you have to be careful about complications.

  • Among the main risks: mastitis.
  • It is the consequence of untreated engorgement.
  • It causes a high fever and must be treated quickly.
  • The best remedy?
  • Breastfeeding as frequently as possible.
  • Don't hesitate to breastfeed your baby as often as possible, even if you have to double or triple the number of daily feedings.
  • The main thing is to drain the breast as much as possible.
  • If after 48 hours you are still not better, your doctor can prescribe a suitable treatment.

I’m a ftm, 4 months postpartum. Im worried about my supply. Since I have gone back to work, I only pump before work and while at work and breastfeed while at home. But I’m worried because I have noticed that when I’m pumping it seems my supply has dropped and I don’t get engorged anymore like I used to. I did have mastitis about two weeks ago and that when I noticed everything changed. Should I try pumping more frequently?

Yes. And if you breastfeed it will be good because the milk will keep coming up. And if you want more milk , I don't know if it works for you but. Some African people's eat peanut to get more milk. Even myself with my two daughters it was like that. And I will be doing it with my third baby.

I eat a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches maybe that will help more and maybe eating more oatmeal would work also. How often a day would someone normally pump at 4 months postpartum?

Just venting a bit.. So not only did I get diagnosed with mastitis last night, I also tested positive for covid ? and being a single mom I’ve been worrying my ass off about my baby.. he is only 5 weeks old and is always with me ? I brought him to children’s hospital emergency today per his pediatricians recommendation. I AM SO DAMN THANKFUL HE TESTED NEGATIVE…but now I’m worrying about caring for him while I am recovering.. I have family but we were all together over the weekend.. so I’m sure some of them, if not all, are going to test positive.. I’m just overwhelmed here..

I know you can breast feed still if you test positive for COVID. Just wear a mask around baby, disinfect everything. Etc. Rn we got exposed to someone who had covid symptoms didn’t tell us. And I’ve been with a mask 24/7 unless showering. I have a 4.5month old and 1.5year old I don’t breastfeed but thou. I know you having it or getting the vaccine will give the baby antibodies, you can even pump and store the COVID breast milk in case you ever need it again.
