When do babies say their first words?

Language is a skill that your baby is developing gradually, and you can help by interacting with him or her playfully.

  • Up to 6 months: Infants make basic sounds, usually vowels, to express satisfaction or discomfort.
  • From 6 to 9 months: babies pronounce their first syllables.
  • Around 12 months: babies say their first words and begin to name things.
  • From 18 months: they can construct simple sentences.
  • Remember that each baby progresses at their own pace, so there's no need to compare your baby to other children or worry if they take longer to talk!
