What is a low-lying placenta? What does it imply?

The placenta is a nourishing and protective organ, but it can sometimes be a source of concern, for example when it is low-lying.

  • A low-lying placenta, or placenta previa, is when it is placed too close to the cervix.
  • It can be detected by ultrasound as early as the 4th month of pregnancy.
  • A close follow-up is set up and rest is recommended.
  • During the 3rd trimester, the low-lying placenta can cause bleeding during contractions.
  • If the placenta is too close to the cervix, or even completely covers it, the delivery will take place by C-section.
