What is an embryo?

Egg, embryo, fetus: all these terms refer to fertilization and the stages of development of a baby. What is an embryo and when does it appear?

• When an egg is fertilized by a sperm, its nuclei fuse to create what is called an egg, which then moves into a fallopian tube.
• From this point on, we talk about an embryo, which is the very first stage of your baby's development.
• This stage lasts exactly 56 days or 8 weeks.
• After this period, the embryo, which already has the appearance of a baby, becomes a fetus.
