Post-traumatic stress after childbirth
Approximately 9% of women experience what is known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after childbirth.
- Most often, this condition is caused by real or perceived trauma during childbirth or the postpartum period.
- These traumas may include an unplanned cesarean section, the use of certain instruments such as forceps, or concern about the baby's health.
- PTSD can manifest itself in many ways: flashbacks, nightmares, difficulty falling asleep, feelings of distress, or panic attacks.
- If you are experiencing symptoms that worry you, don't hesitate to talk to your health care professional.
