Inducing labor : membrane sweeping

You've heard about induction and, among the different techniques, you wonder what membrane sweeping is?

  • It is a very simple manual procedure that allows you to induce contractions without the use of pharmaceutical solutions.
  • The gynecologist mechanically detaches the inner surface of the cervix with a finger, without breaking the water bag.
  • In most cases, this simple and painless procedure causes contractions to start within 48 hours.
  • The main benefit is that no hormones are required. Membrane sweeping is a gentler, more natural technique.

It’s different for everyone. I know women that it put them into labor within hours and some that it took a few days so it really just depends on your body. Sometimes a second one is even necessary cause sometimes it don’t work, just gotta wait and see how my body acts with it but she thinks it’ll be successful with me cause I been dilated for a while now and having contractions.

Mine didn't hurt but I was also told it wasn't a "full" sweep because baby isn't completely dropped yet. It was like a cervix check but it lasted a lot longer

Baby girl failed her BPP today (she didn’t wanna do her practice breathing) so being induced Saturday morning at 10am. Also, I’m pretty sure the nurse did a membrane sweep? Just her hand movements and the INSANE level of pain was so bad, my fiancé said it was definitely not a normal cervical check. She told me my cervix was “too far back” but I’ve never once had anyone else have an issue while checking me. ? So I’m a little annoyed about that. I was gonna ask for a sweep anyways but if she did it and lied I don’t get why she’d lie about it.

Biophysical something or other. They checked her practice breathing and she wouldn’t do it so she failed.

Has anyone on here asked for a membrane sweep around 37 1/2 weeks? Was your doctor willing to do it? I’m debating asking, I’m so miserable and beyond tired of the prodromal labor.

I have to be induced around 38-39 weeks (probably 39) but if anything I may ask at my 38 week 3 day appointment if he won’t do it this time ?

Mine offered at my 37 wk appt. I declined because I was already 2 CM dilated. But my baby has measured ahead this whole pregnancy and my dr wasn't concerned about her growth/health, just about my pain level. It definitely doesn't hurt to bring it up, the worst they can say is no lol
